My Friend Jeff

2022 began with the death of my dear friend, Jeff Johnson. We had both migrated back to our respective childhood homes in Michigan. I had often driven to the western shore to visit him during the previous year. We shared the joy of birdwatching, crossword puzzles, music, books, amazement at the constant fluctuation of light and color on the water, hilarity and gallows humor. Every time I hear a hawk screech or spot a new "life-list" bird, I want to call him and share my excitement. I am so grateful for the gift that his family shared with me, of time spent with him during his last year. It is hard to describe, but as deep as my grief is, there is also a profound, unshakeable connection, created through having given everything we could to each other in our friendship. This is a wonderful legacy. No thought unspoken. No love unexpressed. No regrets.
